Safety

On this record breaking expedition safety and prevention of accidents and incidents is of paramount importance. There are 3 strands to the measures that will be taken to ensure the safety of the expedition:

Basic safety measures

No amount of high tech equipment and systems will help if the basics are not perfected. Each member of the team will be:

  • Medically trained to treat simple to severe trauma injuries and deal with all cold weather and fatigue injuries
  • Aware of the navigation and situation
  • Trained on and able to use all items of equipment and aware of their locations

Equipment

On an expedition such as this, the first aid kit is not the only item of safety equipment.

Everything we carry is designed to help keep us alive and healthy throughout our time in the Antarctic. Everyone must completely understand the purpose of each item we carry, and its operation must be second nature.

All kit must be treated and looked after as carefully as if our lives depended on it - which they do.

Emergency safety systems

To ensure the safety of the expedition the team will carry 2 satellite phones along with spare batteries and solar chargers to enable regular contact with base camp.

If the expedition team does not contact the base camp for 3 consecutive days then a pre-arranged safety procedure will be followed to coordinate safe evacuation of the team from the ice.

The team will also carry two Personal Locator Beacons (PLB) which can be used to signal for evacuation should the satellite phones fail to function.
